Basler Fasnacht
Switzerland's largest and most important carnival, the Basler Fasnacht, is on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
On the Monday following Ash Wednesday, at exactly 4 a.m., the bells of Basel's oldest church, St. Martin's Church, ring out. All the lights of the city are then switched off and on the command "Morgestraich: Vorwärts, marsch!" (“Reveille! Forward, march!") thousands of fifes and drums play the traditional melody of the "Morgenstreich" (Morgestraich in Swiss German) march, which can be heard in the streets of Basel, illuminated by a multitude of coloured lanterns.
