Irène SCHWEIZER
(1941 – 2024)
Irène Schweizer, who passed away July 2024 at the age of 83, left her mark on free jazz for six decades, in Switzerland, Europe and the whole world over. An outstanding improviser in the tradition of the volcanic Cecil Taylor, the Schaffhausen-born pianist helped launch a number of major projects on the Swiss music scene (Taktlos festival, Canaille festival of improvised music by women, Intakt label) - not to mention her many groups and collaborations.
Dany Gignoux photographed her on several occasions between 1980 and 1997, from Nyon to New York, via Geneva, Zurich and Willisau, testifying to the importance of this cosmopolitan musician.
