DIMITRI (Jakob Dimitri)
(1935 – 2016)
A complete artist, as much a clown and mime as a musician and even a stage director, the Swiss Dimitri (1935-2016) is one of the leading figures in the circus arts of the 20th century. Drawing inspiration from both his idol the clown Grock and his mentor the mime Marceau, Dimitri created a mute character, dreamy and musical, who inspired smiles rather than laughter. He triumphed in New York and Paris, and above all on tour with Circus Knie in 1970, 1973 and 1979. It was during the first two tours with the Swiss circus that photographer Dany Gignoux captured Dimitri in action, grimacing and playing the guitar or a miniature bandoneon.
