Tony WILLIAMS

(1945 – 1997)

At only 13, Tony Williams (1945-1997) plays his first professional gigs. Four years later, the wonder drummer joins Miles Davis' second great Quintet, alongside Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter. Their collaboration would last until the end of the 1960s and produce over a dozen albums. According to Miles, Tony Williams becomes "the centre around which the band' sound revolved". After leaving Miles, the drummer gets involved in the birth of jazz fusion, with his own band Lifetime and in Trio of Doom with John McLaughlin on guitar and Jaco Pastorius on bass. He revisits the Miles years with V.S.O.P. and the Great Jazz Trio, and even plays drums on Public Image Limited's 1985 "Album". He dies at the age of 51, following a surgical operation.
